Chicago with Cheryl and Dave

One of the reasons for our route this year was to meet up with daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Dave in Chicago. They met there ten years ago and it was fun touring the city through their memories as well as their professional viewpoint (sorry for the brag, they both work at a Smithsonian Institution). We started at the Art Institute and the Matisse Exhibit. Jerry and Anna Lee got lost in the Impressionist and O’Keefe sections before joining them at Matisse. We would need many more days to enjoy this great museum, but, alas, we had to leave when they ushered us out.
The next day we checked a request off Anna Lee’s list with an architectural tour on a river boat.

The Second City, the first one burned down, knows how to show off her buildings by leaving space between them. Her reputation for outstanding architecture is well deserved.

Skipping the Field Museum where Cheryl and Dave met when they worked there, we all went to see the new exhibits at the Shedd Aquarium. We were underwhelmed by the Fantasea show which seemed better suited to Marine World than a scientific museum. On the other hand, the Wild Reef, depicting a reef off The Philippines and the impact of humans upon it was excellent.

Having former residents pick out good restaurants allowed us to enjoy great sushi and phenomenal Italian food. Anna Lee could not let that last little bit of chocolate get away. Even as a decoration, it was still worth those last few calories.

Cheryl proved her ability to find unique dining places with Jonathon’s in Portage, IN for great traditional American breakfast. Most of all we enjoyed playing cards, talking, and just being together, even for such a short time.
