Our views of Chicago have been vastly different. Jerry has been checking out the interior of the meeting rooms of our hotel while Anna Lee has walked the streets seeking those places not explored when Cheryl lived here.
Hopping aboard a ride-around-the-town trolley provided Anna Lee with a bit of history and a serving of humor about this wonderful city. Getting off in the Loop, she was able to chase down the sculptures by Picasso, Chagall, and Miro that add accent to the financial center of the city.
At the Navy Pier, a stained glass museum displays religious and secular works by Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Comfort Tiffany, two men who left their marks of beauty on many places in Illinois. “Ascension” by Tiffany changes dramatically as it is backlit.
A walk along the Magnificent Mile took first Anna Lee, then both Jerry and Anna Lee, to Grant Park. The walk which was organized by the Commercial Law League which is the sponsor of Jerry’s meeting, took us past many examples of the architecture for which this city is so acclaimed. Our cameras were almost worn out with photographs of the structures and sculptures of the Millennium Park section of Grant Park. With its Gehry-designed pavilion to the mirrorlike Cloud Gate, or “bean” as locals call it,
to the Crown Fountain with its many faces occasionally spewing water, the park is just a lot of fun.
One thing we have both enjoyed is the wonderful Italian food of the town though we ate separately. For entertainment as well as nutrition, we both went to the conference’s Iron Chef Competition sponsored by caterers from Macy’s. Jerry’s team won the wine competition, surely his California expertise helped. Anna Lee joined the line of floral design losers.
Other teams prepared appetizers, salad and dinner, all of which were good. The chocolate buffet back at the hotel made for a luscious dessert.
