The Shores of Lake Michigan

Our friend Marie describes her time in Michigan in terms of winters. We are having our first winter here. Unseasonable weather includes tornadoes, hail, and snow. So far we have only had cold and rain. We ventured out for some wine tasting (not bad) and to walk the boardwalk to one of the many lighthouses along Lake Michigan.
The previous comment is history as the sun came out along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Though it is still cool, we are enjoying the beauty of this area. In addition to the “great lake,” there are smaller lakes everywhere. With the clear skies, the water is ranges from glacial blue to turquoise to sandy beige.
We walked on Cottonwood Trail in Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. The dunes are spotted with trees and grass. The air is crisp and clean.

Fishtown (now Leeland) is a true fishing village with well-fitted trawlers docked next wooden shacks. In addition to buying smoked fish to enjoy later, we had wonderful whitefish for lunch at The Cove, a good tourist restaurant.

We visited more of the lighthouses along the shore points. Great Traverse Lighthouse is open for self-guided tours and a steep staircase leads to the top with views of islands miles out in Lake Michigan.

We discovered that Michigan makes some pretty good wine and added more bottles to our motor home collection.

Oh, and Anna Lee found a couple of boutiques with some other things she can take home.
