Waupun and Horicon Marsh

Charence Shaler, the wealthy son of an early pioneer family, chose to reward his town with a group of bronze sculptures, some of his own creation like the Pioneers.

Others by such artists as James Earl Fraser, whose twice normal size “End of the Trail,” stands near the local cemetery.

We both enjoyed and learned from our pontoon boat tour of Horicon Marsh, a human-maintained marsh and bird refuge. We saw brown pelicans, a bald eagle, nesting wood ducks, Canada geese with their brood and a painted turtle.

This year’s early spring followed by a return of winter has affected the migration of the over 100 species who use this area as a flyway.
