Kentucky and horses are synonymous (okay bourbon too but that comes next).
Our day at the Kentucky Horse Park was fun and educational for even the non-horse set. On arrival, a horse- drawn carriage offered orientation to the park.
In the “winner’s” circle of the Hall of Champions four honored horses were presented for our admiration. They are Mr. Muscleman, a trotter, Kentucky Derby winner Funny Side also known as the Gutsy Gelding, Da Hass a double crown winner, and Cigar who won 16 races in a row.
Six different breeds of horses, Palomino, Danish Warmblood, pony, thoroughbred, Connemara Pony and Friesian, strutted in the Parade of Breeds. Their riders were appropriately dressed for each breed. They were followed by a pair of miniature mares and their colts.
The International Museum of the Horse has excellent displays from the extinct Equus of what is now America through the evolution of the horse and development of horse breeding in Asia and Europe to the role of the horse in American history. Displays also contain such facts as that the Conestoga wagon drivers chose to drive on the right side of the road and the story of MacAdam who first created the paved roadbed. There were also special exhibits for the Buffalo soldiers, trophies, carriages, Arabian horse breeding and the children’s book Black Stallion. In one room beautiful handmade tapestries hung over head.
We all left this wonderful attraction with a greater appreciation of this beautiful animal.
