Salzburg

This is Sound of Music country and the sites and sounds are everywhere.

We started our day tour in Mondsee where the interior of the 1470 basilica was used in the Sound of Music wedding scene.

Among the traditional statuary and paintings in the basilica was a skeleton said to be Conrad who was poisoned by his fellow abbots for trying to change some of their traditions.

The road climbed through the beautiful Lake District of Austria where the trees were changing color.   This is a popular vacation destination and has many lovely homes for getaways.

Salzburg was ruled by an Archbishop-Prince putting all the control in the hands of the church.

Among the famous people born in the city are Mozart and Doppler.  This is the house where Mozart lived

The lovely Mirabell Gardens are filled with statues and fountains including Mozart’s Papagina Mermaid and Paris holding Helen.  The fountain was the center for “Do, a Deer.”

We found more “love locks,” this time on a walking bridge.

After checking out another baroque cathedral, we wandered the town center.  We have found “food carts” in several towns.  From this one in the town center we purchase great sandwiches.

Later we went to the Sacher Hotel to delight in small samples of the signature creation, the Sachertorte.  This was about the best chocolate ever.

The winding streets of the old town are filled with shops whose purpose is indicated by metal sculptures over the doorways.

Lederholzen and dirndls seem to be ordinary dress for many Austrians and Germans.
