Austin, TX

We are surrounded by trees and near two small waterfalls yet right in the city of Austin. McKinney State Park is one of those camping treasures, lovely yet convenient.  Its location allows us to partake of Austin’s activities without driving a long distance.

We also get to admire the state flower, the blue bonnet.

We started our day here by meeting former neighbor Arnie for lunch at what must be the most popular brunch place in town.  The Magnolia Cafe was another good Travel Advisory find for Jerry.  While we enjoyed our benedicts, more than a hundred other people must have also been served.   We enjoyed being with our friend and catching up on our lives.  We were glad that they were "Sorry, we're open".

Our cupboards were in need of refilling, so we took a recommendation and went to Central Market.  It is like no grocery store we had seen, an Ikea on food steroids.  Starting with produce and following the maze through meats, cheeses, etc., we had to force ourselves to resist over-shopping.  How we wish for a store like that at home.

We spent a lovely evening in our campsite under the evergreens reading, bbq-ing, and relaxing.

RV friends Carol and Paul are in the same park and we spent the next day on an 11K volkswalk through the downtown, including a guided tour of the state capitol.  The best adjective we can use to describe Austin is funky.  Buildings are blazing with color, restaurants and food trucks offer unique dining, and the architecture is a pleasant mix of Victorian and contemporary.

The four of us and Leigh, a friend of Carol and Paul, braved wind and cooling temperatures to stand on the Ann Richards Congress Bridge and waited an hour for the bats to fly out for their nightly dining.  We have heard a lot about this and are glad we did in once.

Leigh’s husband made us a dinner group of six at Second, a delicious example of Austin dining.

Our trip was too short and we sadly missed the LBJ Library as well as the famous music scene.  This city is on our “we have to come back list.”
