Up, Up and Away

Indianola is host to the National Balloon Classic, a flight of about 100 balloons. Unlike Albuquerque where everybody walks among the balloons, spectators cannot go onto the field but instead relax in chairs to watch each balloon ascend individually. Unique to this festival was a Californian soaring with 70-90 helium filled balloons each about 5 - 7 feet in diameter. The whole thing is called a “cluster balloon,” The scene reminds you of the movie “UP”. The balloonist gets a running start, drops his ballast, and rises above the crowd. He later descends by releasing balloons. We enjoyed watching all the colorful balloons launch and many floated directly overhead. Following the balloons was a fireworks display, again with each rocket shot off separately. We enjoyed the familiar patterns and well as some new ones with a great finale.

One part of the program that Anna Lee particularly enjoyed was eating.

We also visited the National Balloon Museum and enjoyed a movie on ballooning history. The displays were minimal.
