Walking Des Moines

Leaving from the Botanical Garden, we walked an 11K Volksmarch along the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers. There seem to be bridges across the rivers’ every block, a big difference from Sacramento. Like Sacramento, Des Moines is a capitol with a domed capital, this one gleaming gold with four smaller ones surrounding it. The walk took us through lovely parks and around a large lake. It was one of the nicest walks we have taken. Along the way we met an architectural historian named Lois who regaled us with stories of preserving documents that were subjected to damage during the floods last winter.

After the walk, we took a brief tour of the Botanical Gardens and drove around Des Moines a bit.
